Red Wing Shoes only uses premium, durable leathers. Each piece of leather is meticulously cut from its skin and meticulously sewn together by experienced sewing machine operators using century-old Puritan sewing machines. The upper of a boot is formed over a foot-shaped last and then welted or stitched down depending on its construction. This process ensures a sturdy yet comfortable boot that can be fully resoled if necessary. Shoes manufactured to meet safety standards are also made to meet ANSI/ISEA 107 specifications, with many styles offering puncture-resistant options for extra protection. Most Red Wing Heritage boots feature Goodyear welt construction – a method that has been in use since 1869. Stitchdown, an ancient method of footwear construction dating back to the 17th century, involves flaring outward the leather upper and stitching it down to the midsole. After being cleaned and polished by skilled shoe finishers for a perfect fit and appearance, these shoes are then polished, brushed, and finished to provide maximum durability and style.
