these are the top 10 things to consider
when trying to decide between the Red Wing and Thorogood moc toe boots because I've
done a video of each of these boots where we cut them in half go through the layers and
talk about all the information but I wanted to make a separate video comparing the two and just
pulling out all the most important information condensing it into hopefully a five minutes or
less video and give you the information you need to make an informed decision on which boots can
work best for you and thanks to Magic Spoon for sponsoring this video it's the high protein keto
friendly gluten free grain free soy free wheat free nothing artificial child likes cereal for
grownups check these guys out via the link in my description now let's get to the first thing
which is leather the leather of both of these boots are an oil tan which is just chrome tan
leather that's two and a half millimeters thick a lot of people think the Red Wings are a
thicker leather but they're really the same and I think people get confused with that because
of the difference in the temper of the leather so the Thorogood's are a tumbled leather so
it's really soft and malleable the Red Wings are really stiff leather that brings us to longevity
which one I think is going to last the longest I think the Red Wings will it's a harder longer
lasting leather so what does that mean for you if you want a boot that's going to be comfortable
from day one that you don't need to break in the Thorogood's are going to be the boot for you
but they're not going to give you the same ankle support and the same structure that the Red
Wings will so if you want a boot that's going to last longer to give you more ankle support
the Red Wing boots might be the one for you number two is the lining so the Thorogood's is
a cotton trill lining just at the vamp the Red Wings are a leather lining just in the vamp as
well and longevity wise the Red Wings are going to last longer some people have complained
how the Thorogood's wear out after a minute so what does that mean for you if you want a more
breathable boot you might go with the Thorogood's but if you want a longer lasting part of wearing
boot you might want to go with the Red Wing number three is the construction so both of them are 360
goodyear welt the real difference comes in the welt material the Thorogood's are a man-made
well whether it's pvc or plastic or rubber the Red Wings are a leather welt longevity wise
the leather well it's usually known for long lasting longer and the pvc welts are known for
cracking but I haven't heard a lot of people actually complain about the Thorogood's
cracking so what does that mean for you this one's kind of up in the air it depends on if
you're splitting hairs and if this is one of the last deciding factors I tend to go with a leather
welt but I don't think it should be too big of a deciding factor number four is the outsole so
they're both wedge outsoles but the Thorogood is a polyurethane based outsole versus the Red
Wings are a rubber based so I did a durometer test and here's the results the Red Wings are slightly
softer the Thorogood's are a little bit harder so longevity wise the Thorogood's are going to
last longer but maybe not be quite as comfortable and the Red Wing is going to wear out a little
bit quicker but maybe give you a little bit more comfort so what does that mean for you I think
there's more important information on the inside that's going to really sway the comfort one
way or the other but the longevity you might like the Thorogood's if you're not planning on
ever reselling these boots because they're going to last longer number five is the insert so the
Thorogood's come with a nice dual density insert that I actually really like the Red Wings don't
come with one so longevity wise there's really nothing to say so what does it mean for you so
the Thorogood's are going to be more comfortable underfoot initially and basically for the lifetime
of the boot the Red Wings are going to be a little bit harder but the nice thing is you can buy
some inserts slide them in you're going to get the same comfort but the red wings are already a
little bit extra money so the question is do you want to spend the extra money on top of already
spending more money on the Red Wings to get some comfortable inserts inside of them number six is
the lasting board or the insole so the Thorogood's are a fiberboard with 2.5 millimeter pour on
on top the red wings are a big fat slab of five millimeter vegetable tanned leather so durability
wise or longevity wise the Red Wings are going to last a lot longer and you probably will get a
couple more resoles out of them so what does that mean for you the Thorogood's are going to
be more comfortable faster and you're going to get that footprint in your boot a lot faster
because that that fiberboard's softer versus the red wings it's going to take a lot longer
to get broken in but when it comes to reselling you're going to probably get a few more resoles
out of them for cheaper because it's a stronger construction and material number seven is the
shank so the Thorogood's have a fiberglass shank the Red Wings don't have a shank so longevity
wise they're probably the same unless you're doing a lot of work where you're hitting ladders
or hitting shovels or standing on ladders all day then you're going to want to go with the thorough
goods otherwise just walking around there's not going to be a huge difference so what does that
mean for you if you're using these for work you might want to go with Thorogood's especially if
you're using ladders but if you're just walking around there's not a whole lot of difference
between having a shank and not having a shank number eight is the midsole so they're both
cork and rubber midsoles so longevity wise they're about the same the the Red Wings have a
little bit more and what does that mean for you it's I've mostly included this particular aspect
because it's an important part of the construction I didn't want to leave it out just in case you
don't watch the individual videos of me cut these in half number nine is speed hooks versus
eyelets the Thorogood's have three speed hooks the Red Wings have all eyelets longevity wise I
think they're about the same so what does it mean for you speed hooks are a lot easier and faster to
put your boots on but eyelets are a cleaner class more classic look so it's really a thing of
form versus function is what it comes down to number 10 is the fit and sizing so the thorough
goods have a little bit of extra room in the toe and they run true to your brannock true size so
I measured a 10 and I got a 10 they fit perfectly the Red Wings are a little narrow in the toe
kind of squish your toes and the sizing's all over the place so I made a video specifically
how to find your size so what does that mean for you if you're standing working walking all
day you might like the extra room in the toe box or the Thorogood's but if you're going for
that classic Red Wing mock toe look you might be willing to sacrifice a little squish toe
comfort to get the Red Wing look so overall the purpose of these two boots are different the
Thorogood's are worked with you can wear casually and the Red Wings are a casual boot that you can
work in if you have to longevity wise if you're never going to resole them the Thorogood's
are going to last longer because of the sole but if you're going to ever resell them or restore
them several times the Red Wings are going to last longer because that super thick leather insole and
the longer lasting leather upper so what does that mean for you I would just choose whichever one you
like more mostly based on looks and everything you heard in this video unless you're going to work
in them if you're going to work in them go with the Thorogood's because they're going to they're
going to be a better work boot and hopefully you didn't under 5 minutes I doubt it but we'll
see in editing um thanks for everything you guys do see ya oh and don't forget to check
out Magic Spoon in the description see ya!
